Question

Which component of mixture (iron + sulphur) reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid to evole a gas? Name the gas which is evolved during the reaction

Solution

Dear student,

In this mixture of iron and sulphur, sulphur does not react with dilute hydrochloric acid as it is a non-metal.
Iron will react with dilute hydrochloric acid as :

Fe + 2HCl ------> FeClâ‚‚ + Hâ‚‚

From above you can see iron displaces hydrogen from HCl because it lies above hydrogen in the reactivity series, and FeClâ‚‚ is formed with the evolution of hydrogen gas. Therefore, iron reacts with dilute acid.
Hydrogen gas is evolved in this process.
