Question

Which enzyme catalyses the process of carbon fixation?

Open in App
Solution

RuBisCO:

  1. The enzyme ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase or RuBisCO catalyse the carboxylation of RuBP.
  2. It is the first step of the Calvin cycle and the carbon fixation reaction into stable organic intermediate 3-phosphoglyceric acid or PGA.
  3. RuBP or ribulose bisphosphate is the primary acceptor of CO2 in the Calvin cycle.
  4. It is a five-carbon ketose sugar.
  5. In the Calvin cycle, RuBP is carboxylated by the enzyme RuBisCO or RuBP carboxylase to produce 3-phosphoglyceric acid (PGA).
  6. RuBP is regenerated at the end of the cycle.
