Solution

(B) bonding molecular orbital has lesser energy among three.

Molecular orbital theory is very simple to treat mathematically and is a landmark in molecular quantum mechanics. The electrons in atoms occupy atomic orbitals that are represented as the regions around the nuclei where there is a high probability of finding the electrons.

In the so-called linear combination of atomic orbitals approach, as pioneered by Hund and Mulliken, when atomic orbitals come closer together, they overlap forming molecular orbitals. Two atomic orbitals can overlap to form two molecular orbitals, one of which lies at a lower energy level than the overlapping atomic orbitals and is called a bonding molecular orbitals and the other lies at the higher energy level and is called antibonding molecular orbitals .

Each molecular orbital can hold one or two electrons in accordance with pauli's exclusion principle. Molecular orbital theory can explain the paramagnetism of molecules such as Oxygen and NO and other spectral features.

In antibonding molecular orbitals if electrons are filled then then they cause greater repulsion and hence nuclei of the combining spaces tend to repel i.e. repulsive forces dominate over attractive forces .Hence antibonding molecular orbitals have higher energy ,as the electron in it seems to destabilize the system.
