Solution
Thyrocalcitonin is released when blood calcium level is high. Its main actions are to increase bone calcium content and decrease the blood calcium level when it rises above normal. It inhibits the activity of the osteoclasts in bone tissue, thereby preventing the resorption (breakdown) of bone, and inhibits the reabsorption of calcium by the cells of the kidney, resulting in increased calcium excretion in the urine.
Calcitonin opposes the effects of parathyroid hormone, which acts to increase the blood level of calcium.
