Question

Which is more electronegative: a sp hybridized carbon or a sp2 hybridized carbon and why?

Open in App
Solution

sp hybridized carbon is more electronegative than a sp2 hybridized carbon because the more is the s-character.
The more the hybrid orbital is close to the nucleus and hence the more is the electro-negativity.
In sp hybrid orbital, the hybrid orbital is more close to the nucleus than sp2 hybrid orbital. This is due to the more s-character.
Thus, sp hybridized carbon is more electronegative.
