Question

Which is more Ionic NaClorCsCl?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Sodium and Cesium both are chemical elements that belong to the first group of the periodic table.
  2. Sodium and Cesium both donate electrons to form positive ions called cations.
  3. Chlorine is present in both the compounds and accepts the electron to form negative ions called anions.
  4. The atomic number of Sodium is 11 and that of Cesium is 55.
  5. The polarising power of the cation is inversely proportional to the ionic radius.Polarizingpowerofcation1Ionicradius
  6. The size of the Sodium atom is much smaller compared with Cesium atom and therefore the ionic radius of Cesium is much higher.
  7. The higher is the ionic radius of Cesium lesser will be its polarizing power and greater is the ionic characters.
  8. Therefore, Cesium chloride(CsCl) is more ionic compared with Sodium chloride(NaCl).
