Solution

  1. The main basis of identification is the ‘characteristic’ which plays an important role in forming the desired category.
  2. A characteristic is a particular form or a particular function.
  3. For example, based on the presence of membrane-bound organelles, organisms have been classified as eukaryotic or prokaryotic. Membrane-bound organelles help in carrying out cellular processes efficiently so those who don't have would need to have organized their biochemical pathways in very different ways. This affects cell design. Further, nucleated cells would have the capacity to take up specialized functions. Therefore, this is a basic characteristic of classification. Thus, this characteristic of body design is used for classification.
  4. An individual is identified worldwide by providing it a unique name. It can be done by nomenclature. The binomial nomenclature is the two-term naming system given by Carolus Linneaus. For example: - The binomial nomenclature of the mango tree is Mangifera indica. Here, the first name ‘Mangifera’ is the genus name and ‘indica’ is the species name.
