Question

Which is the triploid tissue in a fertilised ovule? How is the triploid condition achieved?

Open in App
Solution

Endosperm

The triple fusion of the male gamete (n) and central cell (2n) results in a triploid cell called primary endosperm nucleus (PEN) which further divides to give rise to the tissue called endosperm.

Triple fusion

Two haploid male gametes released from the same pollen grains are involved in the process of double fertilisation.
The events that happen in double fertilisation are as follows:-
● Fertlisation- One haploid male gamete fertilises the egg to form a diploid zygote
● Triple fusion- Another haploid male gamete fertilizes the two haploid polar nuclei to form a triploid primary endosperm nucleus by triple fusion.

Final answer

Endosperm is the tissue formed. It is formed as a result of triple fusion.
