Iodoform reaction: A chemical reaction in which a methyl ketone is oxidized to a carboxylate by reaction with aqueous NaOH and I2. The reaction also produces iodoform (CHI3), a yellow solid which may precipitate from the reaction mixture. The iodoform reaction been used as a chemical test for the presence of a methyl ketone moiety.
Acetone and acetaldehyde have methyl ketone moiety thus give iodoform reaction. Only those alcohols which contain CHOHCH3 group undergo haloform reaction. Ethyl alcohol also has CHOHCH3 group thus it will also show iodoform test.
similarly if we use aqueous NaOH and Cl2 then reaction produces chloroform (CHCl3) as shown below:
RCOCH3+NaOH+Cl2RCOONa++CHCl3.
