Question

Which of the following complexes show linkage isomerism?
(a) [Co(NH3)5(NO2)]2+
(b) [Co(H2O)5CO]3+
(c) [Cr(NH3)5]SCN2+
(d) [Fe(en)2Cl2]+

Solution

Coordination compounds containing a ligand with more than one non-equivalent binding position (known as ambient ligand) show linkage isomerism.
For example

[Co(NH3)5(NO2)]2+ contains NO2 which have two donor sites N and O can be shown by arrow () as

[Cr(NH3)5]SCN2+ contains SCN which have two different donor sites S and N can be shown by arrow ()

S -- CN

Hence, [Co(NH3)5(NO2)]2+ and [Cr(NH3)5]SCN2+ show linkage isomerism. While [Co(H2O)5CO]3+ and [Fe(en)2Cl2]+ has no ambient ligand. So, these two will not show linkage isomerism.
Hence, options (a) and (c) are correct choices.
