It is shown by compounds where there is the possibility of delocalization of electrons.

Delocalisation is seen in conjugated systems where there are alternate single and double bonds

present.

Delocalisation can occur via :

π-π orbital overlap

π-σ orbital overlap

π-p orbital overlap

In structures where electrons are localized, there is no possibility of resonance.
