The Court of a Chief Judicial Magistrate may pass any sentence authorized by law except a sentence death or life imprisonment or imprisonment for a term exceeding seven years.
A Magistrate of the first class may pass a sentence of imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years or of a fine not exceeding Rs. 5000 or of both.
A Magistrate of the second class may pass a sentence of imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year, or of fine not exceeding one thousand rupees, or of both.
A third class magistrate can pass a sentence of imprisonment for a term not more than 6 months.
