Antibiotics are mainly used against bacteria. Hansen’s disease, pertussis, diphtheria are the diseases caused by bacteria Mycobacterium leprae, Bordetella pertussis and Corynebacterium diphtheria respectively. So, these diseases can be treated by antibiotics.
While mumps is a viral disease caused by mumps virus which cannot be treated by using antibiotic.
Current treatment can only help relieve the symptoms until the infection has run its course and the body has built up an immunity, much like a cold. In most cases, people recover from mumps within 2 weeks.
