hCG, hPL and relaxin are produced in women only during pregnancy. After one month or 4 weeks of pregnancy there is a spike in the amount hCG. Hence, doctors test the level of this hormone in a woman’s blood to confirm a possible pregnancy. hCG is responsible for prompting the uterus to prolong the life of corpus luteum. Corpus luteum of pregnancy produces increasingly greater amounts of estrogen and progesterone until the placenta takes over secretion of these hormones. Because of the persistence of estrogen and progesterone, the thick endometrial tissue is maintained .
