Which of the following is correct with reference to hemodialysis?
Hemodialysis, also spelt haemodialysis, commonly called kidney dialysis or simply dialysis, is a process of purifying the blood of a person whose kidneys are not working normally. One needle will slowly remove blood and transfer it to a machine called a dialyzer (dialysis machine). The dialysis machine is made up of a series of membranes that act as filters and a special liquid called dialysate. The dialysate is a solution of pure water, electrolytes and salts, such as bicarbonate and sodium. The purpose of dialysate is to pull toxins from the blood into the dialysate. The way this works is through a process called diffusion. The membranes filter waste products from your blood, which are passed into the dialysate fluid.
