Photosynthesis is a unique process in which green plants synthesise carbohydrates by utilising water and CO2 with the help of chlorophyll in presence of sunlight.

During light dependent reaction, assimilatory powers, ATP and NADPH are produced. The splitting of water during light reaction leads to the evolution of oxygen.

Glucose is synthesised by utilising the assimilatory powers produced during light reaction. The synthesis of glucose occurs in stroma and this does not require light. Hence, the reaction for synthesis of glucose is a light-independent reaction.
