Today we have around 1652 languages in modern India. Most of the languages from North India upto Maharashtra are derived from Prakrit and Sanskrit. Tamil is a Dravidian language while Sanskrit is an Indo-Aryan language.Prakrit languages are related to Sanskrit but differs from it in several ways. Prakrit means “arising from the source” in Sanskrit. Prakrit languages can be divided into 4 groups namely, the Paishachi, Shauraseni, Magadhi, and Maharashtri languages. Marathi used in our state was developed from the Maharashtri languages.
