The embryo of seed consists of an axis called tigellum to which one or two embryonic leaves or cotyledons are attached. The part of tigellum below the point of attachment of cotyledons is called hypocotyl while on the other hand part of tigellum above the point of attachment is called epicotyl.
The lower portion of hypocotyl and upper portion of epicotyl are called radicle and plumule respectively.

The cotyledons help in storage of food for the young embryo. It is thick and fleshy in dicot seeds.

The endosperm is a highly nutritive tissue that provides nutrition to the embryo. It is mostly found in monocot seeds.
