In the above reaction first bromination is carried out in the presence of Br2 and feric bromide which is followed by its oxidation by KMnO4 on heating which is a very strong oxidizing agent.
After this the reactant is subjected to nitration in the presence of HNO3and H2SO4 which leads to the formation of the product
