Solution

The correct option is C Mice
Transgenic animals carry foreign DNA in their genome, which gets expressed to produce its gene product. They are developed using recombinant DNA technology by introducing the foreign gene into the host cells.
The first transgenic animals to be created were mice having the gene for growth hormone of rats. Since then many transgenic mice, rabbits, pigs, fishes, etc. have been created but almost 95% of transgenic animals are mice.
Transgenic mice having the receptor for the human poliovirus have been developed to study the efficacy and safety of the vaccines before they are administered to humans.
Earlier monkeys were used for the same as primates like apes and monkeys other than humans can be artificially made susceptible to the poliovirus. But monkeys were replaced by transgenic mice because mice are easy to handle in laboratory settings. Moreover, they have a shorter life span and their embryos can be cultured easily.
Pigs and cattles are non-primate organisms and are not susceptible to poliovirus. So far, they have not been genetically engineered for safety testing of poliovirus.
