Factory owners made their labourers work for hours on end without much rest. This led to the development of Capitalism, and also its opposing force, Socialism. While Capitalism advocated laissez-faire policy of market demand and supply, Socialism demanded that there be rules to restrict the amount of time labourers worked in factories.
