Hilum is a distinct oval scar on the seed. It represents the spot where ovule(now seed) was attached to the ovary through the placenta. A tiny pore called micropyle is located close to the hilum. It is this pore through which the germinating seed absorbs water and it also serves as a site for diffusion of respiratory gases.
