Which property of ammonia can be proved from the fountain experiment?
Solubility of ammonia in water
The fountain experiment can be used to illustrate the very high solubility of ammonia in water. In this experiment, water is introduced through an inlet to a container filled with ammonia gas. Ammonia dissolves into the water and the pressure in the container drops. As a result, more water is forced into the container from another inlet creating a fountain effect. Since the drop in pressure is significant enough to force the water to enter into the container we can say that ammonia is highly soluble in water.
