Dear Student,
NaCN solution is used as leaching agent in the extraction of gold from gold ore.
In the metallurgy of gold, gold metal is leached with a dilute solution of NaCN in the presence of O2. It reacts with gold from ore to form sodium aurocyanide.
4 Au(s) + 8 NaCN(aq) + O2(g) + 2H2O(l)→ 4 Na[Au(CN)2](aq) + 4 NaOH(aq)
The gold metal is then obtained from the product by displacement reaction by treating the complex formed with zinc dust.
Zn + 2Na[Au(CN)2](aq) ------> Na2[Zn(CN)4] + 2Au (s)
