Question

Which steps in glycolysis produce ATP?

Open in App
Solution

Glycolysis

  1. It is a process in which glucose molecules are converted into pyruvic acid.
  2. The process involves 10 steps and the end products are two pyruvate molecules.

Steps in glycolysis that produce ATP

  1. From one glucose molecule, 4 ATP molecules are produced in glycolysis with an addition of 2 NADH molecules out of which 2 ATP molecules are used in the first half of glycolysis as a total gain of 2 ATP molecules.
  2. Glycolysis is a 10-step process in which steps 7 and 10 produce 4 molecules of ATP.
  3. The reaction taking place in step 7 is catalyzed by the enzyme phosphoglycerate kinase. In this step, 1,3 bisphosphoglycerate is converted to 3-phosphoglycerate.
  4. The reaction taking place in step 10 is catalyzed by the enzyme pyruvate kinase. In this step, Phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) is converted to Pyruvate.
