Solution

Functional Foremanship is a technique propounded by Taylor which talks about hiring specialists for every job. This technique works on the principle of specialization. Through this technique, work is divided into small groups and each group has its own expert. Taylor has suggested the division of work of a factory manager into two sub departments: Planning and Production department. Each department shall have four experts or foremen who will take care of the respective departments.
The four experts in the planning department are namely:
  1. Route Clerk: He decides the schedule of work for a day and the stages or sequences of a particular job that needs to be done.
  2. Instruction Card Clerk: He prepares instruction card for the workers which contains the details of the work, raw materials and machinery.
  3. Time and Cost Clerk: He decides on the time that should be stipulated for a job as well as the cost of production.
  4. Discipline officer: He ensures that discipline is maintained all through the work process.
The four experts in the production department are namely:
  1. Gang Boss: A gang boss is essentially a group leader which ensures that all resources are available and fit to use in the production process.
  2. Speed Boss: He ensures that all work is done at the expected speed. He needs to find a solution if the required speed is not maintained.
  3. Repair Boss: As the name suggests his work is to repair any tools or machinery which might need maintenance.
  4. Inspector: He inspects whether the work done is according to the prescribed standard. If not, he needs to take corrective action in order to have the required results.
