When India was celebrating Independence, violent communal riots broke out in Kashmir, Punjab, Delhi, Bihar, Calcutta, and Noakhali. Mahatma Gandhi chose to walk through the riot-torn areas to stop the communal riots. He preached non-violence through mass gatherings and public meetings. On one such occasion in Delhi, he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on 30 January, 1948.
