Amīr Khusrow was born in 1253 at Patiyali near Etah in modern-day Uttar Pradesh. He served as courtier, royal poet and court musician under Turkish Sultans. He was a prolific classical poet associated with the royal courts of more than seven rulers of the Delhi Sultanate. Khusrau gave to Hindi its first Khari Boli compositions and also wrote many playful riddles, songs and legends.
