Edward Jenner in 1796 discovered the first vaccine against smallpox. Based on his observation that milkmaids who previously had cowpox (a milder version) did not have smallpox, he established that inoculated cowpox vaccine could protect against smallpox. Thus, Edward Jenner established the first scientific basis of vaccination.
