The Sanskrit scholar Neelakanda Dikshidar was patronized by Thirumalai Nayak. Neelakanta Dikshitar was a minister in the 17th century court of King Thirumalai Nayak of Madurai. He was devotee of Goddess Meenakshi. He also composed several poems and literary works, the most popular of them being Ananda Sagara Stavam. Thirumalai Nayak ruled Madurai between A.D 1623 and 1659. He was the most notable of the thirteen Madurai Nayak rulers in the 17th century. He managed to repulse successfully against the armies of Bijapur Sultanate and the other neighbouring Muslim kingdoms.
