When Shastri took over the Prime Minsitership, the country was in severe crisis. The country was recovering from the Indo-China war, failed monsoon, drought and food crisis that resulted in grave economic turmoil. This was the time when country faced another war with Pakistan in the year 1965. It was in this background that Shastri gave the slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kisan to boost the morale of the soldiers to defend India and also to encourage farmers to increase the production of food grains and to reduce dependence on import.b) Jay Prakash Narayan is identified with the slogan given in Option (b), that is, Indira Hatao, Desh Bachao
This was slogan put forward by Jay Prakash Narayan, the leader of the Janata Party. This party comprised all the major non-communist and non-Congress opposition parties that had formed an electoral alliance. These were the parties that were critical of congress and most importantly, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. However, the Grand Alliance did not have a coherent political programme. Mrs. Indira Gandhi said that the opposition alliance had only one common programme: Indira Hatao (Remove Indira).c) Indira Gandhi is identified with the slogan given in option (c), that is, Garibi Hatao
Mrs. Gandhi, in order to counter the increased challenges to her personality and congress, gave a call for Garibi hatao and introduced populist measures to counter poverty. She focussed on the growth of the public sector, imposition of ceiling on rural land holdings and urban property, removal of disparities in income and opportunity and abolition of princely privileges. Garibi hatao became part of her national strategy and helped her to strengthen her support base among the landless labourers, Dalits and Adivasis, minorities, women and the unemployed youth.
