Alkyl Halides are insoluble or sparingly soluble in water because two things are required to happen
for dissolving :-
1 It is necessary to break Bonds of Attraction between the alkyl halide molecules and also to break the Hydrogen bonds between water molecules Much energy is required for this
2 While dissolving alkyl Halides in water new bonds of Attraction between alkyl Halides and water molecules are formed This process releases little energy
The energy released in formation of new bonds of Attraction as given in 2 above is much less than the energy required to break the bonds as given in 1 above
Therefore alkyl Halides are insoluble or sparingly soluble in water.
