Question

Why and How are soil treated with acids and bases?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Soil is treated with acids and bases because it is very crucial to maintain the pH of the soil in order to meet the needs of the plant that is grown on that soil. Excessive usage of chemical fertilizers in the field makes the soil more acidic and it more harmful to the growth of the plant. If the soil is too acidic, it is important to add lime or urea to raise the pH of the soil. The basicity of the soil can be reduced by adding ammonium sulphate and ferrous sulphate which are acidic in nature and it will bring down the pH of the soil.
