Question

Why are different products obtained when molten MgCl2 and aqueous MgCl2 are electrolysed with inert electrodes?

Open in App
Solution

Step-1 In Molten MgCl2 ions:

When molten Magnesium chloride MgCl2 is electrolysed with inert electrolytes,

Mg2++2e-Mg2Cl-Cl2+2e-

Step-2 In Aqueous MgCl2 ions:

When aqueous Magnesium chloride MgCl2 is electrolysed with inert electrolytes,

2H++2e-H2(PreferentiallydischargeofH+overMg2+)2Cl-Cl2+2e-
Step 3: Products obtained during electrolysis of molten MgCl2 and aqueous MgCl2 using inert electrode
Molten MgCl2 gives Mg2+ion during electrolysis at cathode and Cl-ion at anode.

Aqueous MgCl2 gives Hydrogen gas at cathode and oxygen gas at anode.
