Question

why are ionic bonds stronger than covalent bond

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Generally, ionic bonds are stronger than covalent bonds. This is because in ionic bonds, electrostatic forces of attraction are involved. The positive ion (cation) and the negative ion (anion) are held together by electrostatic forces of attraction which are very strong. To break an ionic bond, these ions have to be pulled apart which is very difficult due to strong attraction between them.
