Question

Why are nerve cell long and branched ?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
Good question. Nerve cells are usually very long and branched so that it helps in transmission of signals or electrical impulses over all parts of the body. They divide and re-divide and so cover a large surface area of the body and every portion receives the signals from the central nervous system. This enables action of any muscle cells and tissues( even the very minute ones) to act spontaneously to the stimuli. The large, branched and vast network is the reason why we walk, talk and do everything that we are doing.
thank you
