Question

Why BF3 is weak lewis acid?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

The boron hallides, the empty 2p orbital of boron overlaps more effectively with the filled 2p orbital of fluorine. Thus, the availability of lone pair reduces. The bonding is strongest in BF3, and when boron fluoride accepts the electron from a donor molecule, this bonding is lost and due to this BF3 resist this change strongly and reduces the acidity.

-Regards
