Question

Why cannot we store AgNO3 solution in a copper vessel?

Open in App
Solution

We cannot store AgNO3 solution in a copper vessel, Because,

  • Copper is above silver in the electrochemical series or the reactivity series and so copper is more reactive than silver, so copper definitely displaces silver from silver nitrate, Hence we cannot store AgNO3 solution

Cu+2+AgNO3(l)Cu(NO3)2(l)+2Ag+

  • Based on the ease with which atoms of metals lose electrons to form positively charged ions, the metals are arranged in a series known as the activity series or electrochemical series.
