Question

Why do ionic bonds do not exhibit isomerism?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Ionic bonds donot exhibit isomerism because ionic bonds are non-directional. Ionic bonds involves electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. Now, as the charge is uniform in all directions, so the ion is surrounded by other ion from all direction. Therefore, there is no specific orientation of atoms in space relative to one another i.e. they are non-directional. Hence, they donot exhibit isomerism.
