Question

Why do liquids easily take the shape of containing vessel, but not the solid?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The forces between particles of liquids are weaker than the forces between particles of solid.
  2. Liquid particles are further apart and can move more easily.
  3. The molecules in the liquid are not so closely packed and they have space between them.
  4. Since the particles can move, the liquid can flow and take the shape of its container.
  5. In solids, particles are tightly packed because of strong intermolecular forces. They are rigid and have a definite shape.

Hence, liquids easily take the shape of containing vessels, but not solids.
