Why do nephrons degenerate in old age?

nephrosclerosis is the hardening of the walls of small arteries and arterioles that carry blood to kidney, causing hypertension.
during old age, due to nephrosclerosis there is a decline in kidney function called renal aging i.e many nephrons degenerate.
this can be accelerated by diseases like diabetes mellitus.
