Why do people sprinkle water on a roof after a hot summer day?

In a hot summer day, the roof is quite hot. Water absorbs a large amount of heat from the roof for its vaporization. The roof gets sufficiently cool and one can sleep comfortably.
Evaporation/Vaporization is an endothermic process. It absorbs energy from its surrounding while converting the liquid into gas and makes the surrounding cool.
