Question

Why do plant cells not have lysosomes?

Open in App
Solution

Lysosomes usually digest macro-molecules that somehow get through the plasma membrane. macro-molecules are also called as "big" molecules or foreign matter, like bacteria or non-functional organelles( structures inside cells performing functions). plant cells don't have that problem, because plant cells have cell walls. the cell walls are pretty secure and keep a lot of junk out. lysosomes also participate in apoptosis, which is also called cell death for animal cells only.
Plant cells have an equivalent organelle called lytic vacuole which helps in removing waste.
