Question

why do sex cells have only half no. Of chromosomes than other cell.

Open in App
Solution

Its because those sex cells (male gamete) have to fuse with other sex cell (female gamete) to produce a new cell (zygote) which must be 2n (diploid).

These sex cells are formed by meiosis (reduction division).

It is ddue to meiosis. They have only one set of information. They cannot have duplicate information of the same gene. Gametes when fuse with the other half i.e. opposite gamete, the zygote which is formed will have two set of chromosomes. This makes the zygote diploid and hence ploidy (Number of chromosomes) are maintained in the next generation
