Question

Why do stomata close at night?

Open in App
Solution

Stomata:

  1. Stomata are openings present on the leaf epidermis that aid in the exchange of gases and water.
  2. They are surrounded by guard cells that facilitate the opening and closing of the stomata.
  3. Stomata is open during the daytime to allow gas exchange.
  4. Photosynthesis occurs during the day and thus stomata are open to supply the carbon dioxide required for the process.
  5. The stomatal openings remain closed at night as photosynthesis is not conducted without sunlight.
  6. They are closed to prevent water loss via the stomatal pores.
  7. The gaseous exchange required at night doesn't occur via stomatal openings and is conducted by diffusion.
