Question

Why do sea waves get stronger at night?

Open in App
Solution

Gravitational Pull:

  1. The gravitational pull of a body is a force of attraction that the body exerts on an object.
  2. This gravitational pull is experienced by all bodies with different magnitudes. Earth and moon have their gravitational pull too.

High tides and Low tides:

  1. High and Low tides occur due to the moon's gravitational pull on Earth and its rotational force.
  2. When the moon is closer to Earth, its gravitational force attracts the objects on Earth.
  3. It is usually experienced by sea waves because water is a flexible liquid that can take any shape.

Waves get stronger at night:

  1. The moon changes its distance from Earth as it rotates around its axis an also revolves around Earth. It orbits quite fast.
  2. At night, the moon rises and the distance between Earth and Moon is lesser.
  3. Therefore, sea waves get attracted towards the moon and get stronger.
  4. But they cannot get pulled completely towards the moon as its gravitational force is not stronger than Earth's.

Hence, the waves get stronger at night due to the moon's gravitational pull.
