The indiscriminate hunting of tigers by poachers pushed the population of tigers to the brink of extinction. They were killed for their skins, bones, teeth and claws which are highly valued for their use in traditional Asian medicine (TAM),folk remedies etc. This act of the poachers endangered the tiger species.

Ministry of Environment and Forests (MEF)initiated Project Tiger aimed at not only saving the tiger population from exploitation by man , but to help them multiply in its natural habitat. Funded by the World Wide Fund, 18 tiger reserves were created in India entirely to provide a natural habitat to tigers and encourage their breeding.
