Question

Why do we need DNA polymerase?

Open in App
Solution

DNA polymerase:

  1. DNA polymerases are enzymes that aid in DNA synthesis and duplicate DNA during cellular division.
  2. It synthesizes new DNA strands using deoxyribonucleotides.
  3. It conducts pairing in specific combinations and adds nucleotides to the 3'-OH end of the newly synthesized strand.
  4. They are incapable of initiating replication and require primer sequences to add nucleotides.
  5. DNA polymerase III is responsible for replication in prokaryotes while DNA polymerase delta is involved for replication in eukaryotes.
  6. The 3'-OH group of the new strand acts as a nucleophile and interacts with the ∝-phosphorous to form a phosphodiester bond.
