Solution

Mrs Dorling had taken a lot of stuff from the house of the narrator's mother on the pretext of looking after it and keeping it safely till the war ended. After the war was over, the narrator paid a visit to Mrs Dorling's house. But, Mrs Dorling refused to let her in as she was afraid the narrator would ask her to return her mother's stuff (which was rightfully hers): antiques, silverware, furniture, etc.
