  • Water and oxygen are required for rust at normal temperatures.
  • Because boiling the water eliminates all dissolved gases, including oxygen.
  • This water lacks oxygen so rust doesn't really occur.
  • However, if the water is reintroduced to atmospheric oxygen, additional oxygen will dissolve as the water cools, and rust will form once more.
  • Thus rust will not occur in pre-boiled water as it lacks oxygen, which is essential for rusting.
